Gay boxing.
I did not find a lot of information about gay boxing on the internet. It looks like it is unique to the Philippines. An “Only in the Philippines” kind of thing. Gay boxing is a regular activity during local fiestas and small town celebrations.
Gay boxing is a mix of show, comedy and serious fighting. The fights I witnessed were only 3 rounds long and the winner was elected by a judge. The winner got 1000 pesos and the loser 500 pesos which is quite a big amount of money here.
Baklas (gays) are often considered a third gender, and most baklas display feminine mannerisms and dress as women. Some identify as women.
Baklas are socially and economically integrated into Filipino society, and are considered an important part of society. The stereotype of a bakla is a parlorista, a cross-dresser who works in a beauty salon. Though bakla, in general, connotes flamboyant effeminacy, the term is also applied to any homosexual man, regardless of his level of flamboyancy or effeminacy.
